This course is designed for healthcare professionals involved in the acute, surgical, and critical care management of neurotrauma patients within Ecuador’s public and private healthcare systems.

Intended participants include:

  • Prehospital providers (ECU 911 personnel, paramedics, emergency response teams, firefighters)
  • Emergency physicians and trauma surgeons
  • Neurosurgeons and neurosurgical residents
  • Intensivists and critical care specialists
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Emergency and ICU nursing staff
  • General practitioners working in regional and secondary-level hospitals
  • Hospital administrators and healthcare leaders engaged in trauma system organization and policy development

The program is particularly relevant for professionals seeking to integrate global scientific advances into daily practice while addressing regional disparities in resources, infrastructure, and referral pathways across Ecuador

This two-day academic program explores the most recent global advances in neurotrauma and focuses on translating innovation into practical, system-adapted strategies for Latin America, with special emphasis on Ecuador.

This course bridges cutting-edge scientific developments — including modern classification systems, new theories about pathophysiology multimodal neuromonitoring, precision-based management, and updated international guidelines — with the structural and logistical realities of the Ecuadorian healthcare system. Through expert lectures, real-case analysis, hands-on sessions and multidisciplinary discussions, participants will explore how innovation can be realistically implemented across tertiary referral centers, secondary-level hospitals, and prehospital systems.

The primary goal of this course is to facilitate the effective translation of global innovations in neurotrauma into practical, evidence-based, and context-sensitive strategies applicable to Ecuador and Latin America.

Specifically, the course aims to:

Update participants on the latest international standards, new theories about pathophysiology,  classifications, and management protocols in neurotrauma.

Promote evidence-based clinical decision-making across the continuum of care — from prehospital stabilization to neurosurgical intervention and neurocritical care.

Strengthen coordination between different levels of care within Ecuador’s healthcare network.

Identify feasible strategies for implementing advanced neurotrauma concepts in both high-complexity centers and resource-variable settings.

Contribute to the development of more standardized, outcome-oriented neurotrauma care nationwide.

Ultimately, the course seeks to reduce preventable mortality and long-term disability by aligning global scientific progress with local clinical realities and system capacities in Ecuador.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the pathophysiology of neurotrauma and its management through established models (protocols, guidelines).
  • Understand the treatment options for neurotrauma and when to apply them (airway, resuscitation, immobilization).
  • Apply the principles of neurotrauma care in the emergency room
  • Identify care protocols with proposals for emerging innovations in the field, identifying the interventions suggested in areas with limited resources
