This course aims to encourage neurosurgeons to take a leading role in stroke treatment additionally provides the fundamental basic knowledge before and after the mechanical thrombectomy.

By completing this course, participants will be better able to:

  • Improve perioperative medical management in Intensive Care to improve clinical outcomes.
  • Formulate a management plan based on the clinical evidence available for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (LVO) of the anterior and posterior circulation.
  • Use the basic concepts in the preoperative management of stroke (Management of blood pressure, establishing candidates for intravenous tPA, etc.)
  • Identify candidates for mechanical thrombectomy based on initial clinical presentation, brain scan, CT angiography, and advanced imaging techniques such as CTP.
  • Use a standard approach for acute large vessel occlusion (Carotid Occlusion, Mid Cerebral (M1, M2), Basilar Occlusion.
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of the use of stent retrievers and direct mechanical aspiration.
  • Manage complex cases of acute ischemic stroke (tandem lesions, posterior circulation, associated intracranial stenosis).
  • Recognize the different devices after having the opportunity to use them in the simulation models.
